Trio Anima Mundi – ‘Three’s Company’

Sometimes composers believe that larger-scale works can be successfully presented with smaller forces. Such is the case with the two works in Concert Three. Both the Symphony (reduced from full orchestra) and the Septet (originally for piano, trumpet, two violins, viola, cello, bass) were re-arranged by their composers for the piano trio medium to terrific effect. Vardos trace the beloved Roma musical tradition to its Eastern sources. In contemporary Romania synthesisers and electric violins have crept in, but here Vardos play traditional instruments in the classic ‘Taraf’ formation of violin, accordion and double bass, with vocal laments and ballads in Romanian and Romani (Gypsy) language.
