Scandinavian Masterpieces: Zelman Symphony

December 3, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

$37

Grieg and Sibelius are the two greatest exponents of Scandinavian music, and we have pleasure in presenting their most popular and well-loved works.

Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Piano Concerto are both heavily influenced by Norwegian folk songs and dance. We welcome one of Australia’s’ foremost pianists, Stefan Cassomenos, who will delight you as his fingers dance across the keyboard in the Piano Concerto.

ABC FM lists Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in the top 10 of the 100 favourite classical works of all time! This symphony has more of a nationalistic character and will provide a triumphal conclusion to the concert.

Mark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm.

The concert will also feature the world premiere of a new work from the Zelman Symphony / Melbourne University Emerging Composer of 2016.

Program:

Grieg – Peer Gynt Suite No. 1
World Premiere of a New Work
Grieg – Piano Concerto in A minor
Sibelius – Symphony No. 2
