As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Orchestra Victoria will this year light up Melbourne’s wonderful arts precinct with its popular Five at 5 chamber music series at its current residence, the Joan Hammond Hall in Southbank. Showcasing select members of the orchestra, the hour-long performances will take place at 5pm on five Saturdays throughout the year from 2 March until 21 December.
The first of the Five at 5 series will be held on Saturday 2 March with ‘Serenade’, set to take audiences on a journey through the sublime music of Mozart, Pärt, Sculthorpe and Dvorak’s rarely-heard Serenade for Wind Instruments.
Serenade March 2, 5pm, Joan Hammond Hall
Mozart Serenade in D major K.239, “Serenata Notturna”
Sculthorpe Little Serenade for String Quartet
Dvořák Serenade for Wind Instruments, Op.44, B.77
The Five at 5 repertoire will offer guests an accessible and enjoyable mix of music, from the beauteous baroque through to masterworks by Australian contemporary composers. Showcasing the likes of Corelli, Mozart, Brahms and music of the 20th and 21st centuries, there will be music to appeal to everyone. The concerts will offer patrons the perfect end to a Saturday afternoon, or entrée for an evening out post-show.
