Melbourne Opera: Barber of Seville

June 25, 2015 @ 7:30 pm

Rossini’s hilarious “Barber of Seville” remains one of the most popular and entertaining of operas.  Considered the most popular comic opera of all time, it is the hilarious tale of an overprotective guardian outwitted by his daughter’s lover with help from the factotum, Figaro.  Melbourne Opera presents it again due to popular demand, with a first rate cast lead by mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell.  Baritone Phillip Calcagno features as Figaro the artful Barber, with Herald Sun Aria winner Brenton Spiteri as Count Almaviva and Roger Howell or Ian Cousins as the overprotective guardian Don Bartolo.  David Gould reprises his hilarious scheming Don Basilio and Jodie Debono stars as the maid Berta.

Hugh Halliday directs this superb production, and Greg Hocking conducts the Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra.  It will be sung in English.
