The Holy Sonnets of John Donne

July 23, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

$48 – $65

Faith in a tortured world & hope of redemption
Composed in two weeks after his return from concerts at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp when Britten was in bed with a high fever in 1945, The Holy Sonnets of John Donne pulsate with a hatred of war.

Dedicated to Peter Pears, and composed in homage to Purcell, the poems address the issue of faith in a tortured world of death and misery, with a link to the hope of redemption.

Acclaimed chamber music duo Eidit Golder and Michael Smallwood are joined by their colleague and Australian Chamber Orchestra cellist Julian Thompson, for two performances celebrating Britten and those who influenced him.

MASC conclude this elegiac program with the world premiere of Melbourne composer, Adam Yee’s setting of the Hebrew liturgical poem Yigdal.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Melbourne Art Song Collective
