Another String to my Trom(bow)ne

August 5, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Friends of Music Series returns in 2018 with a stellar lineup of top Melbourne emerging musicians, boasting a variety of styles ranging from classical, folk to jazz and contemporary performances. In August, we welcome dynamic duo, Laura Barton and Dale Vail.

Having met while studying together at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, Laura Barton and Dale Vail both went on to complete a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours, and are now in their second year of study at the Australian National Academy of Music. They are also now studying towards a Master of Music degree through Griffith University.

Laura began the violin at the tender age of three in the small, country-music- obsessed town of Gore (NZ). Since then, she has performed around New Zealand as a member of several professional orchestras, and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. Her other love is for the conductor’s baton, and is enjoying the new set of skills she is gaining from this.
Dale picked out the trombone as the silliest looking instrument at a brass band concert when he was two years old. He has gone on to become one of the top trombonists in New Zealand, winning national solo titles and performing with internationally recognised ensembles. These include the Wellington Brass Band, Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. He is also a published composer, and has a passion for creating new works.
