Victorian Opera presents: The Princess and the Pea

March 25, 2017

$40 – $45

Could a single pea beneath your mattress ruin your night’s sleep?

‘Happily Ever Afters’ continue as Victorian Opera returns to Arts Centre Melbourne for another enchanting fairy tale opera for family audiences. A very fussy Prince is perpetually dissatisfied with the parade of Princesses introduced as potential brides and wonders if he’ll ever meet his true love. One evening, a young Princess arrives at the castle drenched with rain and seeking shelter. The Prince is captivated by her, but she must first prove herself a true Princess. A single pea is hidden beneath a tower of mattresses to test her Royal sensitivities.

American-emigrant composer Ernst Toch’s musical rendition of Hans Christian Andersen’s treasured story The Princess and the Pea receives its Australian premiere. This charming 50-minute family production is sung in German by a cast of opera’s brightest talent. Libby Hill returns to direct, following her productions of Hansel and Gretel, Alice’s Adventures in Operaland and Cinderella.

Presented in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne.
