Melbourne Opera presents Roberto Devereux

November 18, 2017 @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Melbourne Opera rounds out the year with its third instalment of Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy, Roberto Devereux.

Melbourne Opera is fortunate to have secured distinguished Australian soprano Helena Dix, who will perform Elizabeth I in between engagements at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Though the title may suggest otherwise, make no mistake – Roberto Devereux is very much a vehicle for a star soprano who has the notes. Famous predecessors are a veritable who’s who of bel canto divas – Leyla Gencer, Monserrat Caballe, and Beverly Sills are just a few sopranos associated with the role.

Helena scored a huge personal and critical success as Elsa in Melbourne Opera’s widely acclaimed production of Lohengrin earlier this year, with The Australian applauding her “lyrically opulent Elsa”. She will now bring her formidable bel canto talents – acclaimed throughout Europe, UK and at the Met – to bear on this great role.

Suzanne Chaundy returns to direct this quintessential bel canto drama about thwarted love and political machinations, completing her new stagings of Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy over three years.
